Applied Behavioral Analysis: Providing Behavioral Therapy

by scott birkestrand

What is Applied Behavioral Analysis?

  • Increasing useful behaviors and decreaseing potentially harmful behaviors
  • Using evidence base methods

Who can BENEFIT

  • Behavior interventions can be used with everyone
  • It is commonly used with young children who have autism

What is autism

  • Autism occurs early on
  • it affects the way a persons brain and body work
  • this can make it hard to communicate, build friendships, follow directions...
  • each person is unique
You know how the outside of our bodies are all different? It is the same on the inside of our bodies too. We are all born with different size stuff on our insides too. Our brains are all different too. When a person has autism there brain is configured in a way that makes it difficult for them to do certain things such as socializing and following norms.

Behavioral Intervention

  • identify undesired behavior
  • Understand the persons motivation
  • identify desired behavior
  • develop intervention
  • impliment intervention
  • take data
  • analys data
  • Make changes and repeat
I worked with a kid who loved playing mouse trap.
What do you need to play mouse trap?- Friends
This child would always want to be the one to start the process of capturing other peoples mice so if he was not the one that landed on the square that allowed him to start the process, and someone else did, he would get frustrated and knock the board over. none of his siblings wanted to play with him after that so we had to figure out a way to make his desire more functional in order for him to keep playing the game.

Balance

Benificial vs. Harmful
Using Bx therapy can assist people in working towards achieving their personal goals.
but...
There is a point where behavior intervention can be harmful. A teacher can change all of your behaviors by only praising the students who are absolutely silent. That would influence a lot of you to never talk in class, sit up perfectly straight (kind of like a robot). That could hinder your ability to learn and also keep you from being yourself.

How did I become a Behavioral interventionist

  • Promoted to high school
  • Graduated high school
  • Graduated college
  • Looked for jobs on Craigslist
  • Applied
