FRESHWATER ECOSYSTEMS

RIVERS, STREAMS, LAKES, AND PONDS

RIVERS
Plants here live on the bottom and algae lives on the top. Animals eat the algae and sometimes eat other organisms.

STREAMS
Not many plants live here. The few animals that live here have to have suckers or hooks to survive the strong current.

LAKES AND PONDS
Lots of plants grow here due to clear water letting the sunlight hit the bottom. Many kinds of fish will live in the water and feed on the plants while turtles dragonflies and frogs live on the shore.

SALTWATER/MARINE ECOSYSTEMS

INTERTIDAL, NERITIC, SURFACE, AND DEEP ZONES

INTERTIDAL ZONE
Plants that live here have to be used to the constant change in tide meaning they are sometimes completely submerged while other times, they are completely dry. Animals here have to adapt to pounding waves and constant change in temperature.

NERITIC ZONE
Algae are the only plants that grows here because lack of a lot of sunlight. Many small schools of fish live here and eat the algae.

SURFACE ZONE
There are few plants here other than algae. Tuna swordfish and small whales have to eat the algae or other small fish.

DEEP ZONE
Not many plants grow here due to lack of light. Animals have to be able to see on the dark to live here.

ESTUARY
An estuary is where freshwater and saltwater meet. Plants and animals both have to be able to to survive in both fresh and salt water.
