CHILDHOOD

  • He had seven siblings
  • Raised by his father
  • Second oldest in family
  • Raised as a Catholic
  • At the age of 13, in 1930, a mass opened his mind to priesthood
  • Went to San Miguel and Rome to study, and returned in 1943, at the age of 26, as a priest

ACCOMPLISHMENTS

  • Sent President Jimmy Carter a letter saying,"We are fed up with weapons and bullets"
  • campaign for human rights in El Salvador, won many national/international admirers and a Nobel Peace Prize nomination
  • Broadcast, he denounced violence of El Salvador's developing civil war and patterns of abuse and injustice

OPTION FOR THE POOR AND VULNERABLE

  • Comforted people, sheltered the homeless, listened to people's problems, and helped them about it
  • Became a martyr for for those who struggle to overcome poverty and oppression

DIGNITY Of WORK AND RIGHTS OF WORKERS

  • Became known as the "Voice of the Violence
  • Spoke courageously in defense of social justice and human rights
  • Fought and spoke in defense of the Church
