When/Why it was established?

  • Established in 1991
  • Named after Dr. Archie Carr, Jr. because of his push for sea turtle conservation
  • Carr made the declining sea turtle populations public and the reasons for this tragedy.

Wilderness

  • Wilderness is a place that shaped the land that isn't inhabited by, or has been affected by humans.

Main Uses for the Refuge

  • Goal is to protect threatened turtles
  • UCF Marine Turtle Research Groups study nesting ecology of several types of sea turtles

Regulations and Laws

  • No hunting
  • No disturbing sea turtles
  • No night entrance through beach
  • No releasing animals in habitat
  • No fireworks
  • No motor vehicles
  • No firearms
  • Must be sober to enter area

  • This is the nation's only refuge designed to protect sea turtles
