Why is Archimedes important?

He was the first person to apply physics in mathematics 

What was Archimedes background?

  • Born in 287 BC in part of Syracuse
  • Devoted his whole life to research
  • Killed in a massacre
  • Lived for 75 years 

How many things did he invent or discover?

  • Archimedes claw
  • Pulley

  • Desgined a catapult

He was captured by roman forces after two year siege

  • he was drawing a diagram when a roman solider approached him to meet General Marcus.
  • Archimedes declined saying he needed to finish the diagram.
  • Furious the roman solider killed Archimedes.
  • The last words attributed to Archimedes are "Do not disturb my circles"
  •  Archimedes died in 212 B.C during the second Punic war.

  • The tomb of Archimedes carried a sculpture illustrating his favorite mathematical proof
  •  In 75 BC, 137 years after his death, the Roman orator Ceriero was serving as a quaestor in Sicily.
  • He had heard stories about the tomb of Archimedes, but none of the locals was able to give him the location.
  • Eventually he found the tomb near the Argentine gate  in a neglected condition and overgrown with bushes.
