PROS OF ANTIBIOTICS

  • They attack bacteria in an organism
  • Disrupt a bacteria cells ability to build protiens or DNA
  • They promote animal growth (a reason farmers use them)
  • They help animals store and process food
  • Save the lives of those with bacterial infections

CONS OF ANTIBIOTICS

  • They lead to drug-resistant bacteria that makes people sick
  • Overuse of them for the wrong reasons can be deadly
  • Doesn't kill bacteria, it stops their growth
  • (MRSA) can spread through food supply, water, and air
  • In animal food, it can cause antibiotic resistant germs

HOW ARE THEY USED?

  • They are used in food producing animals
  • Therapeutic use- to treat existing infections
  • To control spread of disease linked to the environment and organisms
  • Growth promotion- to increase body weight gain or growth
  • To treat infections not caused by a virus

How Does Resistance Occur?
Bacteria can become resistance to antibiotics in many ways. One way is simply because of natural selection. Some bacteria will inherit the trait of being resistant to a specific antibiotic. When that bacteria reproduces, it will likely pass on that trait because it will survive from that antibiotic. Another way is from transformation and transposon. Both of the methods take advantage of swapping or copying genes that are capable of becoming resistant to antibiotics.

WHEN IS ANTIBIOTIC USE NESSICARY?

  • Used when you have a bacterial infection (not a virus)
  • Pneuhomia, bacterial meningitis, urinary tract infection, and STDS
  • Antibiotic resistance occurs when the germs develop immunity to an overused antibiotic
  • Your body stops making antibodies when you take antibiotics, this causes it to become susceptible to the virus
  • If you take it when you have a virus, It can hinder your bodies ability to stay healthy

How Do Antibiotics Help Humans?
Antibiotics are used to treat illnesses in humans that are linked to bacteria. The biggest cause of antibiotic resistance is the overuse and misuse of antibiotics. Doctors often subscribe these antibiotics when dealing with a virus, not linked to bacteria. However, it's not always the doctors fault. Some patients demand the drug to often or for an inappropriate cause.

Alternatives to Antibiotics
There is an alternative to antibiotics for medical use it's called PPMO's and they disrupt the DNA of the bacteria while antibiotics just stop the functions and their processes. For farming instead of using antibiotics we could feed the animals probiotics and vitamins that help them grow instead of unnecessarily pumping the animals full of drugs. Such as vitamin D it reduces the level of bacteria in cows from the studies taken.
