ARGENTINA

THE FLAG

  • The sun represents the day they became independent, May 25th, 1810
  • The blue and white stripes represent clear skies and snow of the Andes. The sun is in the middle to shine throughout all of Argentina

POPULATION

  • The population in Argentina is 41.45 million people
  • The immigration of Argentina was mostly from Europe but also from the Arab world, Russia and Japan.
  • 97% of the population in Argentina is of Europeans
  • Asians have slowly been increasing in Buenos Aires neighborhoods and other large Argentine countries

GEOGRAPHY

  • Landforms- Grasslands of the Central Pampas, Plateau of Patagonia, Andes Mountains
  • Argentina is south Americas 2nd largest country, in land area, and population. It occupies most of the continents southern region between the Andes Mountains and Atlantic Ocean.

CLIMATE

  • Hot,humid summers,cool dry winters
  • In January and February Argentina is in the season of summer because they are in the Southern Hemisphere

RELIGION

  • Majority of the population is Roman Catholic
  • There are other important religions in Argentina such as Muslims and Jewish communities with a sizable number of faith

FESTIVALS/ HOLIDAYS

  • El Dia de Tradicion- is celebrated on November 10 which marks when Jose Hernandez was born,was a self-taught writer and poet, Hernandez wrote "El Gaucho Martin Fierro," which is considered one of the greatest works in Argentine literature which talked about the challenges the gauchos faced at the time
  • El Carnival del Pais- a fasting holiday for two weeks in prior to Lent. Argentines gather together in communities and enjoy each others company, while dressed up in the traditional clothing. There is dancing, singing, art, and food. Instead of serving meat they serve fish.
  • La Revolucion de Mayo- when they became independent and they throw a huge festival for enjoyment.

SPORTS

  • Football is the most popular sport in Argentina.
  • They also have other sports that are played professionally like boxing, padel tennis, polo, and rugby union
  • They have done quite amazing in the World Cup. They came in 2nd place in the 2014 World Cup.
  • Argentine athletes have won 70 medals at the summer Olympic Games, 24 of them are from boxing.
  • Super star athlete in boxing is Sergio Martinez and Lionel Messi is there superstar athlete in football

TYPICAL FOODS

  • Dulce de leche- popular national spread used to fill cakes and pancakes
  • Empanadas- small pastries of meat
  • Grilled meant from the asado (barbecue), on top of there meats they put a chimichurri sauce which is a green salsa
  • A traditional drink is called mate which is dried leaves and twigs soaked in hot water

CLOTHING

  • The men of Argentina prefer to wear the western style.
  • There are many people in the country side who where the traditional Guachos.
  • The women of Argentina love to wear brightly colored, embellished dresses.

LANDMARKS

  • Buenos Aires Obelisk- is similar to the Washington Monument. It is said that the Obelisk was created to commemorate ten students that were kidnapped and tortured durning Argentinas last dictatorship.
  • Mount Fitz Roy- a mountain with beautiful sceneries of snow capped mountain peeks.
  • Talampaya Canyon- visitors can enjoy the many scenic areas such as the different mountain shapes and natural sculptures created by erosions.
