ARMENIAN gENOCIDE

The Armenian Genocide,from 1915 - 1918 is considered the first "modern " genocide. It is responsible for killing 1.7-2.5 million people.

Armenia was sucked into the Ottoman Empire in the 15th century. The Armenians were given lower rights and had to pay higher tax's than Muslims. Throughout the 19th century though, Armenians prospered under Ottoman rule.

The Ottoman Empire was not pleased with this. The Armenians were mainly following Christian laws and teaching. The Ottomans were also not pleased with that. At the end of WWII the leader of the Ottoman Empire ,(Sulton) was obsessed with loyalty at the end of Ottoman Empires reign.

So to "insure" that everyone was loyal to him he in acted a plan to deal with the entire Armenian population. This plan would consist of fire squads, concentration camps, and later, death marches in the desert.

APRIL 15, 1915

April 24, 1915. 800+ scholars are rounded up and killed all over the Ottoman Empire. This is known as the first event of the Armenian Genocide.

June 1, 1915. 12,000 Armenian soldiers massacred in the city of Balu. This was the first attack on Armenian soldiers.

June 25, 1915. Mass deportations begin all over the Ottoman Empire and surrounding countries.

Sometime in July, 1915. The US government finds about the mass deportations in Turkey.

By the turn of 1915 to 1916 the Ottoman Empire had already allegedly killed over 1 million Armenians to this point.

By January of 1916 the Ottoman Empire abandoned the concentration camps and used "Death Marches" as the way to massacre the Armenians.
