PRESENTATION OUTLINE

ARTHROPODA

ALLIE ALEXANDER

ARTHROPODA

  • arthro = joint; poda = foot
  • most numerous phylum of all living organisms
  • many arthropod species are undocumented or undiscovered
  • make up over three-fourths of all currently known living organisms

ARTHROPODA

  • The examples of Arthropoda range in differences
  • Can be found in the deep sea and mountain peaks
  • King crab (12-foot armspan) to microscopic insects

ARTHROPODA

  • They have a stiff cuticle made of chitin and proteins
  • This forms an exoskeleton
  • Segmented bodies (head, thorax, abdomen)

arthropods

  • Jointed legs and appendages
  • Bilateral symmetry

ATHROPODA subphylum

  • Chelicerata-spiders
  • Crustacea-shrimp,lobster
  • Myriapoda-centipedes
  • Hexapoda-insects
  • Trilobita-crab-like organism(extinct)

athropoda

  • Arthropods undergo metamorphosis
  • This is the transformation from larva to adult
  • Changes the way they live and eat
  • Enables organisms to reduce competition

An arthropod's exoskeleton must be shed and replaced periodically. This process is called molting

Arthropoda molting process

  • Enzymes are secreted that loosen the old layers
  • The new exoskeleton layers are secreted
  • The old exoskeleton splits and falls off
  • The new exoskeleton hardens and sets
