  • Arthur Miller was born in Harlem,New York to Isidore and Augusta Miller on October,17,1915. He was the second of three children. He had an older brother Kermit Miller(1912-2003) and the actress Joan Copeland (née Miller) born in 1922.
  • After the 1929 stock market crash the millers lost almost everything. The family moved to Flatbush Brooklyn from Manhattan.
  • Arthur worked odd jobs to save up money,so he could attend Michigan universty.

  • At Michigan university, Miller wrote for the school paper and published his first play,No villain.
  • He took classes taught by Playwright and professor Kenneth Rowe. Rowe inspired Arthur to become a playwright.

  • During the 1940s,Miller wrote plays and a novel called Focus.
  • He won fame with hit plays like All my Sons and Death of a salesman.
  • In the 1950s Arthur was called out by the government as being a suspected communist . He was called more than once before the House of Unamerican Activities. HUAC cited him for contempt of Congress for not naming other suspected communists. They went even further,refusing to renew his passport. This delayed Arthur from joining his new wife ,Hollywood actress Marilyn Monroe over in England. England was where Marilyn's latest movie The Prince and The Showgirl was being filmed.

  • Arthur's first wife was his college sweetheart Mary Slattery. They had two children together:Jane Ellen and Robert.
  • In 1956,he divorced his wife and married Marilyn Monroe less than a month after. Their marriage lasted until their divorce was finalized in 1961.
  • In 1962,Arthur married Austrian photographer Inge Morath. The couple had two children:Rebecca and Daniel.

Later Career and Life

  • Miller continued his career throughout the 1960s,1970s,and 1980s. He worked on writing books with his wife Inge. These works include:'In the Country'(1977) and 'Salesman in Beijing' .(1984)
  • He wrote the 1980 movie 'Playing for Time.' In 1987 Miller published his autobiography 'Timebends:A Life'.
  • Arthur Miller died on February,10th,2005 aged 89.
