ARTICLES OF CONFEDERATION (WEAKNESSES)

  • Limited national government
  • Congress had no power to tax the states
  • No commom currency
  • Each state had one vote
  • There was no Executive or Judicial branch

ARTICLES OF CONFEDERATION (STRENGTH)

  • They were able to make laws
  • Congress could deal with foreign nations
  • Under the articles most power was in the hands of the states
  • They had to ask the states if they needed money

Articles of confederation (government)
THEY HAD ONE BRANCH (LEGISLATIVE) WHICH WAS A CONGRESS. 9 OUT OF THE 13 STATES HAD TO AGREE FOR A LAW TO BE MADE. 13 out of the 13 states had to agree for an amendment to be passed.

The articles of confederation had laws that tried to help the states and come together as a whole.

LAND ORDINANCE OF 1785

  • Under the land ordinance surveyors were to divide public lamds into townships.
  • This resulted in a grid of squares.

LAND ORDINANCE OF 1787

  • This guaranteed basic rights for settlers
  • This also banned slavery

The westward expansion was important because it turned the western land to the national government. The land could be sold to companies wanting to develop western settlements. This was great because the United States kept expanding.
