Claim- Artificial Turf fields are frightening the health concerns of athletes.

WHY SHOULD YOU CARE?

  • Chance of death
  • Chance of acquiring deadly diseases such as cancer
  • Possibility of heat strokes
  • Possibility of hard to recover injuries

Amy Griffin has compiled a list of 187 people– 150 them soccer players– 95 of them goalies- who have been diagnosed with cancer.

In 2012, another study looking at NCAA football injuries showed an increased risk of ACL injuries on artificial turf.

Observations found that on a 98°F day, MU’s Faurot Field an Artificial turf field had a surface temperature of 173°F.

WHAT COULD BE SOME SOLUTIONS?

  • Wear better cleats to reduce injuries
  • Goalies could wear protective pants instead of shorts
  • People could pay more attention to the on-field temperature rather than the temperature outside
