HOW DOES DEATH STRENGTHEN RELATIONSHIPS?

COMFORT

When a person undergoes grief or bereavement, especially one that comes from a death of another family member, they need someone to help them through such hard times. Usually the first people to rely on are our family. We can rely on family because it’s like they are with you in the suffering. It is said that “As families grieve together, they can be intentional about supporting one another” (Bergin p4). So when death occurs within family not only do they find comfort with each other but they also strengthen their relationships with each other

SUPPORT

Supporting each other during a crisis is a sure way to develop a stronger bond with people. It makes sense that when we help others and when others help us we feel a stronger connection forwards them because we see them a someone reliable and safe. The same can go for families because “They can allow venting, reminisce together about the deceased, and look out for each other” (Bergin 4).

GRIEF

In order to understand why it’s important for us to have someone to rely on, people must understand grief. Although grief is something that someone can feel, it’s not something anyone can truly make sense of, there are stages of grief (denial, anger, bargaining, depression, acceptance), but are just “constructs for trying to make sense of an experience that usually doesn’t make much sense” (Bergin 7).

RELATION TO NOVEL

“As I Lay Dying” by William Faulkner tells a story about a family who’s mother dies and they travel to bury her in the place she asked to. The story is told from 15 different perspectives and each tell us the thoughts and feelings of each character. Form the story we see how their relationship with each other changes as the travel around. Battling challenges with each other strengthened their relationship with one another.
