I decided to do my project on Asian Elephants because, I wanted to learn more about this type of elephant. But most of all elephants are my favorite type of animal and I wanted to learn more about these big, but small, elephants.
Asian Elephants are smaller than their African cousins. These elephants could be identified by their smaller, round ears. Females are 224 cm tall and males 329 cm tall. (animals.nationalgeographic.com)
The infant Asian Elephant remains with its mother until it is 5 years old and gains its independence with males often leaving the herd and female calves staying. (a-z-animals.com)
These elephants are also able to cool themselves by utilizing there trunk to splash themselves with mud, dust, or water. They also will flap their ears to release excess heat. (theanimalspot.com)
Asian Elephants have a long standing relationship with humans. These elephants are used to do heavy work such as harvesting and logging and are also used for ceremonial purposes. (animals.about.com)
Their population has fallen significantly over the past several generations due to habitat loss, degradation and fragmentation. Their predators are humans and tigers. (animals.about.com)
Asian elephants are also the victims of poaching for ivory, meat and leather. Many elephants are killed when they come into contact with local human populations. (animals.about.com)
