ASK ME NO QUESTIONS

BY MARINA BUDHOS

In the book "Ask Me No Questions" by Marina Budhos, Nadria, an obese 14 year old who is an illegal alien from Bangladesh. On the cover, there is a girl with light brown skin, but you only see a piece of her eye, nose, and a bit of her mouth. The girl appears to be skinny, and the rest of the cover is black, with the title across the girl's face. It is apparent that it was a struggle to find a cover for this book. According to the marketing industry, nobody wants to read a book with an obese Bangladeshan girl on the cover. To market to young girls, the publishers put a small corner of the girl who wouldn't sell as well if there was a whole picture of her. All of the covers poorly reflect the true nature of the book: coming to accept who you truly are.

There are 2 more covers of this book. One other cover shows an image of a girl in a half moon piece who appears to be much darker and a bit larger. I think that this cover may have been the original. I'm not sure that many people would be very interested in the cover, and I didn't like it myself even though it is much more true to the story than the other two covers. The marketing agency probably saw that this cover wouldn't sell, so they made the hardcover much more different than either cover. The hardcover shows a girl around 15 or 16 who is very skinny and pretty light, who has her phone in her hand and her earbuds in. This cover is very different from the book, but yet it still had more appeal. Obviously the marketing agency saw that this would attract the most amount of people, which is a young happy looking girl with a mysterious book title.
