WHAT IS ASPARTAME?

  • Aspartame is a low-calorie sweetener
  • Made of aspartic acid, phenylalanine, and methanol
  • Approximately 200 times sweeter than sucrose (sugar)
  • Sold under brand names NutraSweet® and Equal®

HISTORY & USE

  • On the American market in the 1980's
  • Used primarily as table top sweetener
  • Heat breaks it down, not used in baking
  • Used as tool for weight managements
  • Increases food choices for diabetics

ASPARTAME EXPOSURE

  • Consumed by over 200 million people worldwide
  • Found in more than 6,000 products
  • Used in over 100 countries
  • Acceptable daily intake set by FDA is 3,400 MG
  • Many rumors that aspartame consumption causes cancer

EVIDENCE

  • Most websites opposing it did not include sources...
  • Over 200 scientific studies have concluded aspartame is safe
  • Found to be safe by many organizations ( FDA, JECFA, others)
  • All the components of aspartame are found in other foods we eat

REASON TO AVOID IT

  • Phenylketonuria (PKU):
  • a rare genetic disorder in which the body
  • can't break down phenylalanine, an amino
  • acid found in many foods (a main component
  • of aspartame)

SOLUTION

IF CONCERNED, DON'T CONSUME ASPARTAME (CHECK LABELS)
