CULTURE

  • Meaning; a word for people's 'way of life', meaning the way they do things.
  • Culture is seen in people's writing, religion, music, clothes, cooking, and in what they do.
  • A culture is passed on to the next generation by learning; genetics are passed on by heredity.

CHRISTIANITY

  • religion based on the life and teachings of Jesus Christ in the New Testament.
  • Christianity is the world's largest religion.
  • Christianity is an Abrahamic religion that began as a Jewish sect in the mid-1st century.

JUDAISM

  • Definition: the monotheistic religion of the Jews.
  • Judaism includes a wide corpus of texts, practices, and forms of organization.
  • Judaism has its roots as a structured religion in the Middle East during the Bronze Age.

HINDUISM

  • Defined as as a religion, a religious tradition, and a set of religious beliefs.
  • Hinduism is often called the "oldest religion" or "oldest living religion" in the world.
  • Hinduism consists of many diverse traditions and has no single founder.

BUDDHISM

  • Based on teachings attributed to Siddhartha Gautama, commonly known as the Buddha; "the awakened one".
  • Buddhism remains most popular within Asia and India.
  • Buddhism is also recognized as one of the fastest growing religions in the world.

ISLAM

  • religion of the Muslims, a monotheistic faith regarded as revealed through Muhammad as the Prophet of Allah.
  • Essential to Islam is the belief that Allah is the one and true God with no partner or equal.
  • The Quran, the sacred text of Islam, contains the teachings of the Prophet that were revealed from Allah.

SIKHISM

  • monotheistic religion founded during the 15th century in the Punjab region of the Indian subcontinent.
  • Sikhism is the fifth-largest organized religion in the world
  • Sikhism preaches a message of remembrance of God at all times, and truthful living.

ANIMISM

  • Definition; The belief in the existence of individual spirits that inhabit natural objects and phenomena.
  • "Animism" is said to describe the most common thread of indigenous peoples' "spiritual" perspectives.
  • Examples of Animism can be found in Hinduism and Buddhism.

URBAN

  • in, relating to, or characteristic of a city or town.
  • Urban areas are created and developed via process of urbanization
  • Urban areas may be cities or towns.

RURAL

  • In, relating to, or characteristic of the countryside; rather than towns.
  • Whatever is not urban is considered rural.
  • Different countries have varying definitions of "rural" for statistical and administrative purposes.

MULTICULTURAL

  • Of, relating to, or constituting several cultural or ethnic groups within society.
  • It is closely associated with “identity politics,” and “the politics of difference."
  • It is also a matter of economic interests and political power.

GENDER ROLES

  • the public image of being male or female that a person presents to others.
  • Gender roles differ from the biological roles of men and women.
  • Example; women's biological roles extend their gender roles to food preparation and household maintenance.

SOCIAL CLASS

  • people having the same social, economic, or educational status.
  • Historically social class and behavior was sometimes laid down in law.
  • the most common being the upper, middle, and lower classes.

SOCIAL MOBILITY

  • Movement of individuals or groups in social standing position
  • More commonly it refers to individuals or families and their change in income.
  • It also typically refers to vertical mobility but can also refer to horizontal mobility.
