History Of Astronomy

Aristotle

  • He was a Greek philosopher.
  • He modeled the moon, sun, planets, and stars and other circles that surrounded us.
  • Thought earth went around the sun.
  • Also thought the stars changed positions as earth moved around.
  • Came up with parallax which is the sift of positions of a object.

Aristarchus

  • Greek astronomer and mathematician.
  • He had a model of the solar system.
  • Nobody accepted his model of the solar system.
  • Attempted to measure the distance to the sun and the moon.
  • His attempt/observation was important to solve a scientific problem.

ptolemy

  • Astronomer, Geographer,and Mathematician.
  • Lived in Alexandria, Egypt (part of Rome).
  • Made a book named Almagest. which was about observations of the planet.
  • Made a detailed model that was continued to be used by astronomers for the next 14 centuries.

Copernicus

  • Polish astronomer.
  • thought Ptolemy's model was way too complicated.
  • He developed the first detailed heliocentric model of the solar system.

Kepler

  • German mathematician and astronomer.
  • carefully watched planets and found they have planetary motions.
  • formed three principles that now are called Kepler's law.
  • each states how each planer or object moves/orbits.

Galileo

  • Scientist who approached questions in a fashion that we call the Scientific Method
  • He made improvements to the telescope.
  • Made more powerful telescope to view celestial improvements.
  • found earth was not the only object that could be orbited.
