Aristotle

  • Believed in geocentric model
  • Believed when Earth moved, so did other planets
  • First to make assumption on alignment of solar system

Aristarchus

  • Astronomer and mathematician
  • First to propose heliocentric model
  • Attempted to measure distance to the moon and sun (failed)

Ptolemy

  • Was an astronomer, geographer, and mathematician
  • Wrote book called Almagest, book on planets
  • Believed in heliocentric model
  • Created "wheels on wheels" system

  • Felt Ptolemy's model was too complicated
  • Developed first detailed heliocentric model
  • Used "wheels on wheels" system

  • Mathematician and astronomer
  • Founded ellipses
  • Formed three principals
