ARISTOTLE

  • Argued that the universe was spherical and infinite
  • Believed earth was also a sphere
  • Believed there was a 5th basic element that was called aether
  • One of his greatest contributions to science was challenging others ideas

ARISTARCHUS

  • First to say the earth revolved on a axis
  • Also said that the earth reveled around the sun
  • Put his theory of the earths rotation out their
  • 1750 years before it was proven by Copernicus
  • Tried to measure the distance between earth and the sun

PTOLEMY

  • Made a model of the movements of the solar system
  • Made the first catalog to organize astronomical objects
  • The model was called the Ptolemaic system
  • It was the cornerstone of astronomy for 15 years

COPERNICUS

  • He concluded that the sun was the center of the universe
  • He kept the Ptolemaic system, but changed the way the orbited
  • His ideas were not popular among churches
  • Astronomers such as Brahe and Galileo helped to
  • eventually prove that this model of the universe was correct

KEPLER

  • He helped develop three laws of planetary motion
  • His first law described the planters movement, the second
  • about the distance from the sun, and third about the universal orbit
  • He believed in the Copernican model of the universe,
  • but thought that Mars did not fit in with it

GALILEO GALILEI

  • He built himself a very high powered telescope for the time it was made
  • He was able to see features on the moon, and stars in the Milky Way
  • He also was able to see four moons orbiting Jupiter, called the Galilean Moons in honor of him
  • He believe in the Copernican model, which frightened the Church, and put him in trial in 1633
  • He was held under house arrest for the rest of his life after the trial

NEWTON

  • Used the math he discovered to describe the models of Copernicus and Kepler
  • Discovered the Theory of Universal Gravitation
  • That theory was the foundation to Kepler's theory of planetary motion
  • His astronomical theory, was found to be applicable to the earth
  • His theory were so accurate that they still are used today

HUBBLE

  • He discovered that far way galaxies are moving away from us
  • Known as Hubble's Law
  • The law describes that galaxies recede at a certain rate from each other
  • His theory is the cornerstone of the Big Bang model of the universe
