Equatorial Coordinate System

What is this

  • a celestial (небесный coordinate system widely used to specify the positions of celestial objects
  • the most common one
  • the Earth based coordinate system

Untitled Slide

celestial equator

  • the projection of the Earth's equator onto the celestial sphere.

Untitled Slide

Declination

  • measures the angular distance of an object perpendicular to the celestial equator.
  • positive to the north, negative to the south.
  • origin for declination is the celestial equator

right ascension

  • measures the angular distance of an object eastward along the celestial equator
  • right ascension is usually measured in hours, minutes and seconds instead of degrees

Untitled Slide

Let`s clarify this:
360 degree=24 hours
1 hour=60 min
1 min=60 sec
So:1 hours=15 degrees
1 min=0.25 degrees
