What is a Strong Library Media Program

and why does it make a difference?
The Worthington Hooker Library Media Program has always been flexibly scheduled, allowing for collaboration between the LMS, arts essesntialists and the classroom teachers. It is vital that administrators support this model and do not use the LMS to cover teacher preparation periods.

See "Implementing the Common Core: The Role of the School Librarian" to learn more about a strong Library Media Program helps students become college and career ready:

Library Power

  • Flexibly scheduled
  • Collection aligned with curriculum
  • Library media/research skills integration
  • Collaboratively planned units
  • Technology integration
There is a large body of research that makes clear the impact of strong school library media programs on student achievement, regardless of the socio-economic level of the student body. See "School Libraries Work" at

Collaborative Planning!

How we really plan!

On-the-fly planning!

Flexibility

and teamwork
All three presenters split our schedules between two buildings, so we are not always in the same place at the same time! We often plan in the hallway, via e-mail or phone. Despite these challenges, out commitment to the HOTS process and philosophy motivates us to find a way!

Examples

  • Coordination: providing resources
  • Cooperation: sharing the load
  • Collaboration: grade level/team
  • HOTS artist
  • Whole school!
The library media specialist can foster arts integration in small ways, by providing a variety of resources for a classroom unit, or by participating and co-teaching a major unit. At Worthington Hooker School, we choose a theme every year for a Black History unit that culminates in an "informance". Students share what they have learned through their reading and research in many ways: visual art, music, dance, drama and poetry.
