PRESENTATION OUTLINE
This is a relic of an Athenian family from 450 BC to 440 BC.
Typically, jars, containers, and other objects might have that family depicted on it, or someone performing some action.
On this jar is most likely a tribute to an Athenian soldier departing from home to war.
From written records, a story can be told of the Athenian man, of how he was raised.
From birth, he would be raised by the women of the household in his early years. If his family was not rich, he would do studies at home, whereas the better off families might send their son to a school. Once he was 21, he would be received as an adult citizen to help run the city. All men were expected to fight as soldiers for their city.
This is a doll with articulated limbs, fancy hair, and castanets.
Castanets are 2 pieces of wood clicked together, similar to what Spanish dancing uses.
This jug depicts a child with a toy and a pet. It is thought that these jugs were used to give kids their first taste of wine at a festival called Anthesteria.
A terracotta figure here is shown as an old nurse with a baby.
These nurses were usually in rich families, where they cared for the young children, practically raising them as a second mother.
