Government

  • was a city-state organized under a single govt.
  • limited democracy: only men could vote, excluded woman and slaves from voting
  • Citizens had more rights in Greek cities than any of the others.
  • citenship depended on birth
  • only men were citezen in Greece, women and slaves were not.

economy

  • was a commercial center
  • exported wine and olive oil; aka trading
  • generated a lot of money
  • they were wealthy from silver mines
  • traded their goods in the Agora which is a giant market place

social

  • classes: citizens (adult men) free men ( women and foreigners) slaves
  • women stayed indoors in the household and slaves
  • slaves did daily work and were treated well
  • if a family was poor the wife might work in field or work alongside her husband
  • men were expected to participate in politics and serve as juror in court

social continued

  • wore fashionable clothes and hairstyles
  • important for men to be physically and mentally educated
  • boy's went to school from age 7 -14 or 18
  • learned to read and write and participated in sports
  • women were not expected to get an education
