Athens is in ancient Greece.
They were only four miles from the Aegan Sea.
The Athenian'sgeographical location encouraged them to trade
They liked arts, music, and architecture.
They grew very powerful through trade.

Athens became a democracy around 500 BCE.
The only citizens were free men.
A group called the council of 500 met every day to discuss laws.
Proposed laws had to be approved by the assembely

Athenian's government wasa based on trade.
They traded with other citystates

EDUCATION
Athenians believed that producing good citizens depended on education.
Until 6, boys were taught by their mothers. Then the went to school.
Teachers taught reading, writing,math and literature.
Most girls did not learn to read or write.
