ATHENS

  • Athens is in ancient Greece.
  • They were only four miles from the Aegan Sea.
  • The Athenian'sgeographical location encouraged them to trade
  • They liked arts, music, and architecture.
  • They grew very powerful through trade.

GOVERNMENT

  • Athens became a democracy around 500 BCE.
  • The only citizens were free men.
  • A group called the council of 500 met every day to discuss laws.
  • Proposed laws had to be approved by the assembely
  • Every citizen had the right to speak

ECONOMY

  • Athenian's government wasa based on trade.
  • They traded with other citystates
  • Athenians bought and sold things at an agora

EDUCATION

  • Athenians believed that producing good citizens depended on education.
  • Until 6, boys were taught by their mothers. Then the went to school.
  • Teachers taught reading, writing,math and literature.
  • Most girls did not learn to read or write.
