Daily Life

  • Boys went to school and passed through the Agora of Athens 
  • There were many things in the Agora 
  • There were lots of people, merchants, and many more
  • Temples and lots of buildings lined the Agora
  • There were any foods in the Agora that you wanted

  • Farmers and artisans sold their wares from stands under shady trees
  • Goods like sheeps wool, pottery, hardware, cloth and books were sold 

Acropolis

  • Athens was sacked by the Persians and the temples were destroyed
  • A few years later Pericles initiated the rebuilding of the city
  • Temples that still stand today were built on the Acropolis
  • Athens is dominated by a hill called Acropolis
  • People settled there because it was easy to defend and had a spring of wate

  • The Acropolis became a sacred place
  • It was used for temples, shrines, and other public buildings

  • They had a direct democracy
  • direct democracy-citizens making policy and law decisions in person
  • They also had representative democracy
  • representative democracy-a form of government founded on the principle of elected individuals representing the people

  • The assembly met every 10 days
  • The council wrote new laws and policies which were debated about in the ass
  • The council had 500 people
  • A man can only be a councilor twice in his lifetime

  • The function of democracy and the administration of athens made so no one 
  • had a lot of power

  • It was burnt down when the persians took over greece
  • It cost a lot of money for the greeks to construct it 
  • Viewers never entered the temple 
  • It was meant to be seen from the outside
