  • It was more free then Sparta
  • They are about 150 miles apart
  • Citizenship was enjoyed by free men
  • They were successful at trading

  • Athens is located in Central Greece, only 4 miles from the Aegean Sea
  • Athens liked to travel
  • Athens had a strong bond with other city states
  • They liked to spread their ideas to others

  • Athens is more filled then Sparta which was more isolated
  • Spartans value spimplicity and strength while Athens boasted of their art
  • Their location encouraged Athenians to look outward toward the rest of the cities
  • Sparta and Athens were rivals

ATHENIAN GOVERMENT

  • The athenian people only allowed free men to be citizens
  • The laws had to be approved by a larger group called Assembly of Athens
  • They made a law that 6,000 citizens had to come to their meetings
  • If the 6,000 citizens didnt come then they would paint a slabe read to get the people to come

ATHENIAN GOVERNMENT

  • Every citizen was allowedbto speak at Assembly meetings
  • All Athenian men over 18 were considered Athenian citizens
  • Every citizen could take part in the government
  • The council met everyday

  • An economy is when a community organizes exchanges goods
  • Their economy was based off training
  • The land did not provide enough food
  • They bought and sold goods at the markets

  • Athenians developed their own money
  • This made trade easier
  • They used gold, silver, and bronze to make coins
  • The coins had images of gods on one side and an owl on the other

ATHENIANS EDUCATION

  • Athenians thought citizens gave a good mind and are healthy
  • Learning and physical training were important to them
  • When the men were 18 they began military training
  • Girls did not learn how to read or write

  • Boys were taught by their mother's and make slaves at a young age
  • They started going to school at 6 or 7 and ended at the age of 14
  • Since the books were expensive the students had to memorize everything after they read it out loud
  • Girls learned how to cook, clean, weave, and spin thread

  • Since woman had few jobs they were selling goods in the markets
  • The most important women were called priestesses
  • Their most important at home
  • They spent their days supervising their homes and raising their children

  • Some people were slaves from the beginning
  • Others were forced into slavery
  • Slaves worked a lot of jobs
