PRESENTATION OUTLINE

troposphere

  • its the first layer
  • its where earth's weather occurs
  • its about 12km thick
  • temperature is about -60C
  • as altitude increases, temperature decreases

stratosphere

  • its the second layer
  • extends from the troposphere to about 50km
  • upper stratosphere is warmer than the lower
  • it contains the ozone layer
  • it protects living things from ultraviolet radiation from the sun

mesophere

  • its the middle layer
  • begins 50km above earth's surface
  • and ends at an altitude of 80km
  • in the upper mesosphere the temperature is -90C
  • it protects earth's surface from being hit by most meteoroids

thermosphere

  • its the outermost layer
  • extends from 80km above earth's surface into space
  • up to 1,800 degrees celcius
  • near the top of the atmosphere, the air is very thin
