WHO WERE THE HUNS?

  • The Huns were a Germanic and barbaric tribe from the steppes of Asia
  • Attila was the most famous chieftain or leader of the Huns
  • Tribe was north of Roman Empire in present day Hungary
  • Very warlike nature and culture. They were horsemen and used bows and javelins in combat.
  • Attila became to be known as the "Scourge of God" because of the devastation he brought on the Roman Empire.

THE HUNS EXPAND

  • In an effort to flee from the Huns, the various Germanic people pushed into Roman lands for safety
  • In 410, hordes of Germans overran Rome itself and plundered it for three days.
  • The Huns plundered and devastated all in their path with a ferocity unparalleled in the records of barbarian invasions.
  • The Huns undertook a series of conquests looting and pillaging the conquered people wherever he went.
  • The Huns gave a new meaning to word "barbarian" for their ruthless nature.

THE HUNS ON ROME

  • Attila terrorized both halves of the empire. In the East, his armies attacked and plundered 70 cities.
  • Attila invaded the eastern half of the Roman empire in the 440's forcing Theodosius II to pay tributes of gold to the Huns
  • Attila surrounded Constantinople accumulating more wealth in tributes
  • Threatened the Capital city of Rome coming through Italy
  • Pope Leo 1 met with Attila, somehow convincing him to withdraw his forces, sparing Rome of utter destruction.
