AN AUMAKUA:

  • An aumakua is an ancestor that has died and come back in another form
  • Can come in the form of animals, plants, and other natural things
  • One or more specific aumakua can belong to a certain family
  • Stories usually have aumakuas intervening to save their ancestors from harm
  • People must worship and feed their aumakua, and behave specifically so they wont anger it

S.A. Bodeen included it in the book because:
-its supposed to be luck for Robie
-because she's in Hawaii
-will later be stranded on the raft out at sea

-THE AUMAKUA LINKS HAWAIINS TO PO, THE REALM OF THE GODS AND ANCESTORS, AND THE CONNECTION IS VERY PERSONAL AND COMPASSIONATE

An aumakua is a large part of Hawaiian culture, and is very sacred
