What Causes the Northern Lights

  • is a result of a collision between gaseous atoms in the Earth's atmosphere
  • the different colors are due to the type of particle that is colliding
  • In order to see it must be a dark clear night and anywhere from September to March in the evening
  • There needs to be solar flares on the sun

  • French scientist discovered the lights and named it after a Roman goddess of dawn, Aurora
  • Borealis came from a roman god of the north wind, Boreas
