AUSTRALIA AND OCEANIA

LANGUAGE

  • English is the primary language in Australia
  • But Australia is estimated to have about 250 diverse languages.

GOVERNMENT

  • Federal Monarchy
  • Constitutional Monarchy
  • Parliamentary System

RELIGIONS

  • The major and most common religion is Christianity.
  • The more traditional religion is animism, the belief that animals and natural forces have souls.

URBAN OR RURAL

  • Australia is mostly desert so there is no place for farming
  • But in the few places people do leave, it is very urban
  • Australia contains 5 cities that have over a million people

FAMILY

  • People in the region can have big or small families
  • Typically, families have one mom, one dad, and 2-5 children
  • But some families have up to 8 people

SOCIAL STRUCTURE AND WEALTH

  • The Australia and Oceania regions have the same social structure as North America- there are white and blue collar workers.
  • The classes include:
  • High class
  • Middle Class
  • Working Class and Lower Class

Fashion, Literature, Music, and Art

  • Modern Australia and Oceania has a unique fashion style that is able to be clearly distinguished from any place in the world. With the use of exotic fabrics like Egyptian cotton and Chinese silks, they can be made into a diverse set of clothing.
  • The Australia and Oceania region also celebrates literature. They have festivals annually honoring poetry, and "quirky, and bloody brilliant literature"
  • Popular music has been influenced by the blues, jazz, hip hop, and modern pop songs, to give it a unique sound. 
  • Famous artists include Davida Allen, Thomas Baines, and Ben Quilty

Education

  • Like most regions, people in the Oceania region send their kids to school rather than teaching them at home.
  • Though most children are sent to school, some are taught at home.

LAND USE

  • Most land is urbanized, and split into several different provinces. 
  • Because it is mostly urban, not much is used for farming. And Australia is very barren, so not much would be used for farming anyway.
  • Much is used for manufacturing in the urban cities. 

TRADING

  • China is Australia's biggest trading partner
  • They trade everything from electronics, to clothing, to food, to money

DIVERSITY

  • In Australia, there is a very diverse set of people
  • The demographics include over 10 ethnicities and over 15 religions
