STRENGTHS OF AUSTRIA-HUNGARY

  • Part of the Central Powers
  • It's alliance with Germany will help with their limitation in military forces and supplies
  • Germany's steel output was higher than Russia, France, & the United Kingdom combined
  • The combination of Germany's steel and coal and industry made them a valuable ally

WEAKNESSES

  • Largely unsuccessful military undertakings
  • Wouldn't be able to win without Germany
  • Unprepared for advanced warfare and didn't have the arsenal to go to war
  • Poorly located geographically
  • Russia dominated the Austria-Hungary border

GAINS

  • Annexation of the Kingdom of Serbia
  • More revenue from taxes for the Austro-Hungarian government

LOSSES

  • Loss of the Slavic population should they lose
  • Multi-ethnic aspect of the empire could backfire on them
  • Could lose their status as a powerful empire
  • The loss of the land that Serbia would have provided would be a big economic blow

FEASIBILITY OF WAR PLANS

  • Assured in their reasoning with the Backing of Germany
  • Felt justified in going to war due to the assassination of Franz Ferdinand
  • Russia had not fully pledged to unconditionally back Serbia (yet)
  • The unconditional backing and carte Blanche by Germany gave AUT-HUN confidence

  • Austria-Hungary and the Ottoman Empire were dissolved
  • Political instability due to the amount of races in the state
  • Change due to industrialization was accelerated rapidly
  • The creation of Yugoslavia as an amalgamation of
  • Serbs, Croats, Slovenes, and Muslims
