HISTORY

  • Discovery: 1943 by Dr. Leo Kanner
  • Autism is the neurological disorder that affects how the brain works in social interaction and communication skills
  • In Greek: 'Autism' means 'selfism.'
  • 1933: Donald Tripett- first person diagnosed with Autism

THE BRAIN

  • Especially affects regions in the lower brain: social interaction, communication and reasons
  • Affects the entire brain

AFFECTS THE BODY

  • Muscle tone is different than non-autistic people
  • Affects the child's balance and coordination
  • Movements can be slow or unpredictable
  • Therefore, making the activities in gym more difficult
