NIGERIA GAINED INDEPENDENCE IN 1960

HOW NIGERIA GAINED INDEPENDENCE

  • In 1937, Great Britain allowed Nigeria a constitution that gave a little more freedom to their people in national relations, but out left out the educated westerners.
  • The educated people would not stand for the constitution and created a new one in 19513
  • The constitution didn't work anymore, so the three political groups came up with a new one.
  • This new constitution divided Nigeria into three sections, western, eastern and northern.
  • The eastern and western regions became free of colonization in 1956, soon followed by the northern region in 1959.p

  • . The Nigerians knew that they would be independent by 1960 and had an election in 1959, but no one won.
  • Two of their big political groups combined and created a government.
  • Abubakar Tafawa Balewa was their prime minister in 1960 and Nnamdi Azikiwe was government general, later to become president

IMPORTANT PEOPLE

  • Nnamdi Azikiwe was leader of the NCNC or National Convention of Nigerian Citizens and later became the first president of Nigeria.
  • Herbert Macauley started the first political party in Nigeria in 1923 called Nigerian National Democratic Party. People called him “father of modern Nigerian nationalism.”
  • Later, in 1944, these guys merged together and created NCNC.
  • The second group was called the Action Group, led by Chief Obafemi Awolowo.
  • The third group was led by Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, called the Northern People’s Congress.

IMPORTANT PEOPLE CONTINUED

  • -There were bound to be conflicts between these three groups later.

NIGERIA HAS BEEN INDEPENDENT FOR 54 YEARS

MAJOR PROBLEMS IN NIGERIA TODAY

  • Up until now, there have been many different corrupted leaders in Nigeria and lots of new constitutions.
  • There is an islamic terrorist group in Nigeria called Boko Haram.
  • They have made the economy much worse that it already was.
  • Boko Haram has killed over 4,700 people in Nigeria starting in 2009.
  • They have so much power over the people, citizens don’t even dare saying the name out loud.

MAJOR PROBLEMS IN NIGERIA CONTINUED

  • Two-thirds of the population live in poverty, even though they are the fifth biggest supplier of oil.
  • Kano used to be a great city and is now a huge failure of Nigeria. Everything is deserted and Joint Task Force units (paramilitary teams) patrol the streets. They are brutal and feared by residents.
  • Nigeria has the most poverty and corruption in it. 50-60% of Nigerians live under the poverty line.
  • 3 to 5 million people in Nigeria are suffering from HIV/AIDS
