What is an Avalanche

  • An avalanche is a flow of snow that rapidly descends down a sloping surface
  • Skying, snowmobiling, hiking, vibrations, & noise can all cause avalanches.

Where does this occur

  • It occurs on all high sloping mountains with large amounts of snow

Ways to avoid a avalanche & prepare for them

  • Know the different types of avalanches
  • take a avalanche safety course
  • recognize the slopes of snow on mountain tops
  • A way to be prepare is to observe the weather 
  • Be prepare with equipment such as shovels, rescue beacon, & avalanche cords

Affects of avalanches

  • Avalanches can cause death, property damage, & interrupt transportation
  • Recreation and ski resorts can be close 
  • During winter avalanches can close highway systems
