PRESENTATION OUTLINE

BACKGROUND

  • Type 1 diabetes is where the body can not produce insulin
  • Mostly occurs in younger people
  • Type 1 is hereditary
  • Extreme thirst, frequent urination, and weight loss

TREATMENTS

  • Insulin pump
  • Taking insulin shots

SCIENTISTS DISCOVERING INSULIN GENE

  • While scientists experimented on pigs by taking out their insulin
  • They used the pigs insulin for the humans but they had diabetics pigs running around and dying
  • The scientists then found that there was an insulin gene
  • They put it with bacteria and it causing it to multiply overnight
  • Then they separated the bacteria from the insulin and used the insulin

BACTERIAL INSULIN MAKER

  • The bacterial insulin maker is surgically attached to the pancreas
  • It is shaped like an 8 on the pancreas and it uses bacteria to make insulin
  • It makes insulin by the insulin gene attaching to the bacteria and multiplying
  • After the bacteria goes through the multiplying cycle the bacteria goes back through the bacterial tube
  • And the insulin goes straight to the bloodstream

BENEFITS

  • Not having to carry the pump around 24/7
  • Not having to inject yourself with shots
  • Not having to watch your sugars all the time
  • You wouldn't have to be on a strict diet
  • You wouldn't have to prick your fingers all the time to check your blood sugar
