Backward Design starts at the end assessment/goal and then design the curriculum to meet the standards. It helps define what the students are expected to learn and how they are to preform.

Stage 1: Identify Desired Results

  • Consider goals
  • Look at Standards
  • Study the Standards

Stage 1: Establish Priorities

  • What is worth being familiar with? (what students hear, read, view, research, encounter, etc.)
  • Specific important knowledge (facts, concepts, and principles
  • Enduring Understanding (the big ideas)

Stage 1- What is worth understanding?

  • Does it have value beyond the classroom?
  • Is it authentic learning?
  • Is the topic left up for interpretation?
  • Does it engage students?

Stage 2- Determine Acceptable Evidence

  • How will students know if they have met the standard?
  • Collect Evidence
  • Use a variety of methods and in complexity

Stage 3Plan Learning Experience & Instruction

  • What enabling knowledge and skills are needed?
  • What activities will be performed?
  • What will need to be taught?
  • What materials are needed?
  • Is the plan effective?
