Background Information

  • Founder is known as the Bahá'u'lláh (Born Mirza Husayn Ali in 1817 )
  • Baha'i means a follower of the Baha'ullah
  • This is an international religion with more than 7 million Baha'i.
  • This religion is practised in 235 countries.
  • In addition to this, Baha'i temples are also found in Little Rock, Arkansas
The Bahá'u'lláh became a follower of Báb at the age of 27
The followers of Bahá'u'lláh were descended from the Bábis - believers in the Báb who foretold the mission of Bahá'u'lláh.
- "The Bahá’í Faith is the youngest of the world’s independent monotheistic religions. Founded in Iran in 1844, it now has more than five million adherents in 236 countries and territories. Bahá’ís come from nearly every national, ethnic and religious background, making the Bahá’í Faith the second-most-widespread religion in the world." (Bahai.us - Founders and History)

FACTS ABOUT BAHA'I

  • The Baha'ullah is the most recent manifestation of God.
  • The Baha'i believe that all religions have true and valid origins.
  • God transcends all human knowledge and cannot be known directly
  • Yet they are known through the lives of prophets and manifestations of God
  • The Baha'i have no clergy
- Baha'i believe that the Baha'ullah, Jesus, etc. are all valid descriptions/manifestations of God.
- God is not fully knowable, they can only be known through the lives of their manifestations.
- (This belief of God not being fully understood is also expressed in Transcendentalism)

FOUR IMPORTANT baha'i Beliefs

  • All humans are equal, there should be no inequality between races and sexes
  • All religions have the same spiritual foundation despite any differences.
  • Baha'i accepts the divine nature of prophets, Jesus, Moses, etc. 
  • They believe that these divine people are more manifestations of God.
- The one God is the source of all creation
- The Bahá'í's believe in an essential unity of the great religions of the world. They do not believe that all creeds are identical, though. They believe that all religions come from the same spiritual source.
- The Baha'i believe that all people, regardless of sex, race, and other distinctions, are equal

WHO IS THE BáB?

  • Siyyid Ali Muhammad is the Baha'i religion's John the Baptist
  • He called for the coming of a "second Christ"
  • He is not actually worshipped, but he is honoured in the Baha'i religion.
  • And so, the Baha'i believe that the Baha'ullah is the second Christ.
  • The Bab is the one that makes it possible for the Baha'i religion to form.

HOW THE BAHA'I FAITH SPREAD TO THE U.S.

  • 1893: Baha'i is first mentioned at the World Conference of Religions
  • 1894: First American Baha'i is Thorton Chase 
  • End of 1894: Four more Americans convert to Baha'i
  • 1909: First National Convention of Baha'i is held.
  • Current times: 160,000 Baha'i reside in 7,000 localities 
-The Baha'i Faith was first mentioned in the United States in 1893 by a Presbyterian missionary at the World's Parliament of Religions held during the Columbian Exposition in Chicago. The following year, Thornton Chase, a Chicago insurance manager, became the first American Baha'i. By the end of 1894 four other Americans had also become Baha’is. The Baha'i Faith spread quickly and groups formed in cities across the country. In 1909 the first National Convention was held and 39 delegates from 36 cities attended.

1920: Baha'i join in struggle for racial equality
1930: 18 books of Baha'i are translated into English and are in circulation
Current times: 160,000 Baha'i reside in 7,000 localities (including 100 Indian reservations)
