BANJO PATTERSON

(1864-1941)

CHILDHOOD

  • Born Andrew Barton Paterson in 1864 near Orange
  • Three different schooling experiences
  • At 16, became an apprentice to Sydney solicitor firm 'Spain and Salway'

EARLY SUCCESS

  • Became a solicitor at 22 leading to the formation of 'Street and Paterson'
  • Began publishing in 'The Bulletin' and 'Sydney Mail'
  • The hugely successful 'Waltzing Matilda' and 'The Man From Snowy River' were published in 1895

LATER LIFE

  • Special war correspondent for the Sydney Morning Herald
  • Appointed Editor of the Evening News
  • Sailed to Europe during WW1 and became an ambulance driver
  • Promoted to Major
  • Achieved a CBE in 1939 after retiring in1930

PERSONAL LIFE

  • Married Alice Walker in 1903
  • Had two children, Grace and Hugh
  • Died 5th February 1941
