BACKGROUND

• Dias was born in Algarue in the1450's
• Born in Kingdom of Portugal
• He died on May 29 1500's
• He died unmarried

EXPIDITION

• January 1488 Dias sailed to Africa
• Storms blew them away from the coast

MAP

• Sailed around southernmost tip of Africa
• Sailed south along west coast of Africa
• Sailed along southeast shore of the continent
• Sailed around tip of Africa to Portugal

DISCOVERY

• Dias did not find African Christian
• His voyage established a sea route
• Atlantic Ocean , Indian Ocean and Asia

LIFE AFTER EXPLORATION

• The journey back Dias observed the southern part of Africa
• Dias named the rocky cape Cabo Das Tormentas
• After 15 months at sea a journey of nearly 16,000 miles .
