Check the Cables

Make sure everything is plugged in where it should be. Some ports (we will discuss these) are the same size and can be easily mixed up. For example, if the headphones are plugged into the microphone jack, they will not work properly.

Reboot Properly

Google It

Most IT professionals have a secret... they use Google to identify problems and locate solutions. You can do the same!

Ask for Help

Common Scenarios:

Web Site Slow to Load

If a web site is loading slowly, try a different web site. If the second web site loads quickly, the problem may be with the first site. Wait a while and try again. If the second site also loads slowly, it could be a problem with your internet connection. A site like http://www.speedtest.net can give you the specifics of your current connection speeds.

Video Won't Play

Some videos and games found online still require plugins like Flash or Silverlight in order to play correctly. If a site asks that you update software to display content, do not click any link that the site provides. For example, to update Flash, go directly to Adobe's Flash site to download the update. If you are trying to play a DVD, it requires special software that in many cases is not included with your operating system. Free software like VLC is a potential solution (check your local laws before downloading).

Programs are Sluggish

Your computer has temporary workspace called RAM (memory) that, like your desk, only has so much space. If it runs out of space (too many programs open), your computer can run slowly. Your computer also has a limited amount of storage space (hard drive). If it gets low on space, it can also make your computer run slowly. Let's look at checking your RAM and your storage space. CCleaner is a good free program for freeing up storage space. If you are running a Windows machine, defragment your hard drive.

To access task manager:(Windows) Ctrl+Shift+Esc
(Mac) Cmd+Opt+Esc

Tool to analyse disk space (Windows): https://windirstat.info

To uninstall programs (Windows): Start -> Control Panel -> Uninstall Program

Pop ups and Ads are Littering my Workspace

Make sure that you are running an up to date virus scan program. AVG and Bid Defender are free examples. Also run anti-malware like Security Essentials or Malwarebytes. Check your web browser extensions, too, for item you don't need or remember installing.
