-To inform our classmates/fellow schoolmates about outdoor skills
-To explain the importance of knot tying
-To successfully demonstrate how to tie basic knots

WHAT IS KNOT TYING?

  • It is an important skill that will save your life in a survival situation, and often times it is the simplest of skills that you have, which will be the most useful.
  • Knot making is a simple mechanical skill, a skill that you will never forget, but it takes practice, repetition in other words so the skills become natural.

IMPORTANCE OF KNOT TYING

  • Survival can depend on a properly tied knot
  • It can be used for our daily activities
  • It can be used for securing a simple load or performing rudimentary but useful tasks
  • It is one of the most simple yet useful skills that you need to know

BASIC KNOTS

  • Bowline Knot
  • Buntline Hitch
  • Square Knot

Materials needed

  • Rope
  • Pole (for certain knots)
  • If there's no rope, any string, lace, or anything that can be tied into a knot is okay

BOWLINE KNOT
-makes a reasonably secure loop in the end of a piece of rope
-does not slip under a load
-used for fastening a rope to a ring or a rope

BUNTLINE HITCH
-used to secure the buntlines to the foot of the square sails
-more secure thean two half hitches and very resistant to shaking loose
-cannot be tied under a load

SQUARE KNOT
-intended to be a binding knot
-can be used to tie a sail cover over a sail, tie shoe laces, and others
-should never be used for critical loads
