THE BATTLE OF BERLIN

WHO AND WHEN

  • This battle was between the Soviet army and the Nazis
  • This battle took place between April 16, 1945 and May 2, 1945 which means it lasted 16 days

WHERE AND WHY

  • The battle took place right outside of Berlin and in Berlin
  • The Soviet army had their land taken over is they had to push back and once they had their land they pushed all the way to Berlin

THE ATTACK

  • The Soviets attacked along side the Oder river just outside of Berlin and defeated The Nazis
  • By April 20th the Soviets began bombing Berlin to destroy the German capital

NEXT

  • After Hitler began to realize that he was going to lose he tried to move the western German army to Berlin to save the city
  • But after the Soviets had surrounded the city on May 1st what was left of the German forces, tried to evacuate but few survived

THE SURRENDER

  • After the breakout attempt on May first the next day the German generals had to surrender and lost the battle and Berlin

WHY DID THE ALLIES WIN

  • The Allies or soviets won because they vastly outnumbered the German troops
  • The Soviet army had 2,500,000 soldiers, about 7,500 aircraft, and about 6,250 tanks while the Germans only had 1,000,000 solders, 2,200 aircraft, and 1,500 tanks

WHY WAS THIS BATTLE SO IMPORTANT

  • It was one of the many reasons that The Allies won
  • They had neared the end of the war and taking over the capital was HUGE! for the Allies
  • It had also knocked Germany out of World War 2 and lead to the killing of Adolf Hitler (suicide)
