ORDER OF EVENTS

  • Sitting Bull leads Native forces to victory in spring of 1786
  • On June 25, 1786 Custer spots Sioux village along Rosebud River
  • Upon finding group of 40 warriors Custer attacked them so they couldn't alert the village
  • He didn't realize he was out numbered 3 to 1
  • Dividing his army in three, he sent Cpt. Benteen block their escape

EVENTS

  • Major Reno crosses the river to attack the village on northern end
  • Realizing his charge would be fateful, Reno ordered a retreat
  • The Cheyenne and Sioux found Custer's men on south side and attacked
  • With the help of Crazy Horse, Custer and all 200 men were killed
  • Reno and Benteen united, broke off the fight, and fled

The Battle of Little Big Horn showed how powerful the Native Americans really were. Though they won the battle they would lose the war with the Black Hills being open to settlement.

Interesting Facts
After killing all of Custer's men the Native Americans mutilated all of the bodies except General Custer. No one knows why..
