THE BATTLE OF MARATHON

THE BEGINNING

  • 490 BC battle began
  • Persians landed at the bay of marathom
  • Phidippides ran immediatly for help 140 miles to reach sparta

THE BATTLE

  • The Athenians had around 10,000 and the Persians had an estimated 25,000 infantry
  • The Athenians did not recieve help from Sparta
  • The Persian center was having domination of the Greeks center
  • To counter that the Greeks chose stronger flanks which worked towards the center

STRATEGIES

  • The Greeks attempted to close the Persians in marathon
  • The Persians wore light armor
  • The Athenians countered the light armor by a defensive position

THE AFTERMATH

  • Persians retreated due to panic in there center
  • Athenians pressed and claimed 7 of the Persian ships
  • Athenians angered the heir to Persian throne Xerxes I
  • Decisive battle kept Persians away for 10 years
  • Darius died during his attempt to increase an army to attack

  • Xerxes I had a servant remind him, of his hate for Greece
  • Continued his fathers growth of an army to kill Greece
  • Would continue the seige 10 years later
