BATTLE OF NASHVILLE

The Battle of Nashville started on December 15th and ended on the 16th in 1864. This battle was during the Civil War which was from 1861-1865. The Confederates had about 30,000 soldiers, whereas the Union had 50,000. The Battle of Nashville took place in Davidson County, TN.

  • Union forces - Ulysses S. Grant, Lincoln, and General George H. Thomas
  • Confederate forces - General John Bell Hood

John Bell Hood led the Army of Tennessee north toward Nashville in November 1864. Hood reached the outskirts of Nashville by Dec. 2nd, and had positions lined up against the Union fire. The Union attack began against Hood’s strong right flank on Overton’s Hill.

CASUALITIES

  • Federal casualties in the battle totaled 387 killed, 2,562 wounded, and 112 missing.
  • Confederate casualties were difficult to determine.
  • Although, a hypothesis would be around 2,500.

SIGNIFICANCE
The Battle of Nashville, Tennessee, fought December 15–16, 1864, shattered the Confederate Army of Tennessee and marked the end of major Confederate offensives in the Western theater during the Civil War.
