  • One of the oldest and most common bridges.
  • First invented by Joseph Aspdin
  • Oldest form consists of a log being placed across a stream.

WHAT IS A BEAM BRIDGE?

  • Rigid structure
  • 1 beam that is supported at each end
  • Held up by pillars

PROS OF A BEAM BRIDGE

  • Very strong
  • Easy to build
  • Inexpensive
  • Built since ancient times
  • Can be made out of natural materials

CONS OF A BEAM BRIDGE

  • The older they are, the weaker.
  • Can only span about 650 feet.
  • Not as eye-catching as other bridges.
