“Caring about an addict is as complex and fraught and debilitating as addiction itself.”

Nic steals money from his younger siblings and even gets arrested for possession in front of them. He was sober for 2 whole years then relapsed once again and David knows that no matter how long Nic is sober, there is always chance for Nic to fall back on the bad road of drug addiction. This is a quote from the father who says that dealing with the addict seems just as hard as dealing with the addiction itself. I like it because it shows how difficult all aspects of an addiction are. You see both sides and both points of views.

“I'm not sure if I know any 'functional' families, if functional means a family without difficult times and members who don't have a full range of problems.”

This quote is showing a father who loves his son so much even though he is addicted to crystal meth. It's about the difficulties that they go through together as a family and as a father/son relationship. I think that this quote accurately describes families because no matter how they look from the outside, there's no such thing as a perfect family on the inside. Everyone has different battles that they're fighting that you might not even know about. Kind of like Nic Sheff in this story because they said that he was such a charming and sweet boy so how could this happen?

“Through Nic's drug addiction, I have learned that parents can bear almost anything....I shock myself with my ability to rationalize and tolerate things once unthinkable."

Nic Sheff and his father David go through the ups and downs of recovery and how it's not always easy to live a happy life. Although Nic makes mistakes, his father loves him the whole way through and I think that this quote shows how unconditional a parent's love for their child is and this book isn't to expose Nic, it's just to help other parents realize that they aren't alone in this.

“When I transformed my random and raw words into sentences, sentences into paragraphs, and paragraphs into chapters, a semblance of order and sanity appeared where there had been only chaos and insanity.”

This quote from David Sheff shows that he wrote this book to relieve some of the pain that he was feeling for his son. Writing is often an outlet for people going through difficult times and this biography of his son Nic was definitely a difficult time in their life. Other people were also helped by his writing when he got letters from families and parents of troubled children who said that his words had helped them get through their own hard times.

"You didn't cause it, you can't control it, and you can't cure it."

I thought that this book was a well told tale of family struggles and I like how nothing was left out no matter how raw the information was. I like that the father loved him through everything and that he stuck by his side no matter how tough things got. I'd recommend it to anyone whether they're having difficulties in their own life or if their just looking for something to read because it truly is an interesting story.
