Individual immigrants made major contributions such as Alexander Gramham Bell. He said, "when me door closes, another opens; but we often look so long and regretfully upon the closed door that we do not see that one opened for us."

Newcomers felt caught between old world and new. Children assimilated more rapidly than their parents.

The fondest dream of any immigrants was to educate their children so they would be better.
"The essence of American opportunity, the treasure that no theif could touch... Surer, safer than bread or shelter"
